‘SIX BULLETS TO HELL!’ IS SHOOTING UP ALMERIA, SPAIN!
Tanner Beard
Just got word that
Tanner Beard, who co-starred in and wrote and directed the excellent Western LEGEND
OF HELL’S GATE (read my review HERE
; read my interview with
Tanner Beard HERE ),
is in the stomping grounds of Leone
and Corbucci and Solima – all the greatest Sergios -- making his second Western, ‘SIX BULLETS TO
HELL!’ or ‘¡SEIS BALAS AL INFIERNO!’
Russell Cummings
Tanner tells me, “It’s a throw-back to
the old Spaghetti Westerns in the vein of the original DJANGO or A FEW DOLLARS
MORE. We're shooting on the sets of
those films and where they also shot THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY and ONCE UPON
A TIME IN THE WEST, along with countless others here in Tabernas and AlmerÃa, Spain.”
Nalia Ma and Antonio Mayans
Interestingly, the inception of this
film can be traced back to a festival last year, on those very locations. Executive producer Danny Garcia tells me, “The
script is co-written by Chip Baker and Jose L. Villanueva, and the first
contact between us and Tanner happened at the last edition of the Almeria
Western Film Festival, where Tanner won the audience prize with THE LEGEND OF
HELL’S GATE. We used Mini Hollywood (the
set built by Leone for the film FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE) and Fort Bravo (used in
hundreds of Spaghetti Westerns as well: DEATH RIDES A HORSE, BLINDMAN, CHATO’S
LAND, etc.) and we shot in the desert of Tabernas and the mountains of Abla for
the epic final duel.”
Aaron Stielstra
Tanner gave me a quick run-down of
some of the international cast and crew.
He’s joined by a pair of compatriots from HELL’S GATE, Ken Luckey
and Russell Cummings; Russell is co-directing with Tanner, and Ken is associate
producing. “The cast and crew is made up
of people from all over the world, so that's been crazy to have so many
languages on set, but very cool.” Among
them is British Crispian Belrage, who was seen in last year’s Western WEST OF
THUNDER as well as THE DONNER PARTY. Beautiful Magda Rodriguez was just in FAST
& FURIOUS 6. Also lending his
sinister presence in Aaron
Stielstra, who
was chilling as the villainous lead in the remarkable THE SCARLET WORM (read me
review HERE ). Spaniard Norberto Morán was seen in the most
recent PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN film, as well as LUCKY LUKE AND THE DALTONS (2004).
Son of a bitch brothers -- Domingo Beltran Sanchez
and Danny Garcia
And to give the movie some serious
spaghetti western street cred (range cred?
trail cred? ), the cast also includes Antonio
Mayans, whose Western credits include the Mexican-shot GUNFIGHTERS OF CASA
GRANDE (1964 directed by Roy Rowland from a Borden Chase script); and the
Spanish-located DAKOTA JOE (1968), MORE DOLLARS FOR THE MACGREGORS (1970 -
starring Peter Lee Lawrence), A TOWN CALLED HELL (1971- starring Robert Shaw
and Telly Savalas), CALL OF THE WILD (1972 – starring Charlton Heston), DEADLY
TRACKERS (1973 – starring Richard Harris and Rod Taylor), and DALLAS (1975 –
starring Anthon Steffan).
Chris Bell
Chip Baker Films
sounds very American, but it’s actually a Spanish company, and their previous
films, documentaries, will be of particular interest to the rock and rollers
among you: THE RISE AND FALL OF ‘THE CLASH’, and LOOKING FOR JOHNNY, about the
life and mysterious death of celebrated guitarist Johnny Thunders. Sharing exec producer duties with Tanner and
Danny is Cesar Mendez, from Chip Baker Films and the Almeria Western Film
Festival. Stand by – I’ll have more
details very soon!
THE WRAP-UP
That's gonna have to do it, pards. Between trying to finish a script, and acting in a play -- three performances so far, and six more to go -- I'm kinda fried. Have a great week! Coming soon -- my review of the two-part opener for season three of HELL ON WHEELS! Here's a teaser!
Happy trails,
Henry

VIRGINIAN PT. 4, ALMERIA, NEW CISCO KID,
THE VIRGINIAN Part 4 – James Drury on Jumping the Shark!
VIRGINIAN cookies!
On Saturday, September 22nd, hundreds of fans,
and eight stars of THE VIRGINIAN television series gathered at The Autry to
mark the 50th Anniversary of the show, which had returned to the
airwaves that very day via INSP. This is
the 4th and final part of my report on those events. One of the day’s high-points was a panel
discussion, moderated by one of the premiere writers on the Western movie, Boyd
Magers, of the WESTERN CLIPPINGS magazine and website: http://www.westernclippings.com/
Here is the second part of that panel’s highlights.
BOYD MAGERS: Jim, what do you think that Clu (Gulager)
brought to the show?
Drury, Shore, Gulager and Clarke
Don Quine
JAMES: The horse that
I was privileged to ride for the first eight years, Jody, 7/8th quarter-horse,
1/8 Appaloosa, was a unique horse – and I’ve never seen another horse do it, before
or since: if his head was between Boyd and I, and we were having a
conversation, if Boyd said something, his ears would go over there and
listen. (audience laughs) If I said something they go over to me. This didn’t just happen once in a while, it
was in every conversation. For eight
years, that horse knew what was going on.

Lenore Andriel with festival judge and Spaghetti Western
Legend Dan Van Husen
Fans of westerns, spaghetti and domestic, gathered this
weekend in Almeria, Spain to celebrate, and to visit the hallowed ground made
familiar to us by Leone and Corbucci, by Eastwood and Nero, and several great
friends of the Round-up were there to screen their fine new movies. The beautiful and talented star, co-writer
and co-producer of YELLOW ROCK, Lenore Andriel, sent me this report from the
front!
How many times have you seen these mountains?
“We're having the time of our lives and our premiere
yesterday (Friday) was mucho bueno! The people here 'have the fever for Yellow
Rock' and we're swamped with pics with them and signing autographs! It is truly gorgeous here, the festival and
people who run it are incredible, the food delicious, and we're in heaven!”

NEW ‘CISCO KID’ IN DEVELOPMENT
I’ve got good news and dubious
news. The good news is Salma Hayek
(Ugly Betty) and Lauren Shuler Donner (X-Men) are
developing a new version of “…O. Henry’s Robin Hood of the Old West, the Cisco
Kid!” for C.B.S. The dubious news is
that they’re “re-imagining the iconic Latino character” into the present
day. Written by THE SHIELD’s Diego
Gutierrez, Cisco is now a Marine returning from Afghanistan , as is his sidekick,
not Pancho, but Sam. When Cisco
witnesses his father’s murder, he and Pancho – I mean Sam – solve the case, and
go on to help the oppressed in The City of Angles (no, I didn’t mean
‘angels’).
It’s being described as
in the vein of LETHAL WEAPON, which Ms. Donner’s spouse, Richard Donner did
very well with. Ms. Donner has done very
well in her own right – her various Marvel Comic movies, X-MEN and all of their
spawn, have grossed more than $4 billion worldwide. I understand that Hispanics are considered an
under-served TV market, so I certainly see the appeal of reviving Cisco. I’ve loved all the Ciscos, from Warner Baxter
to Cesar Romero to Gilbert Roland (my favorite) to Duncan Renaldo (okay, my
other favorite). Jimmy Smits didn’t do
badly, either. But when you remove Cisco
and Pancho – I mean Sam – from their distinct time and place, I don’t what
you’ll have left, besides LETHAL WEAPON with an accent. I guess we’ll find out.
UPDATES --
VIRGINIAN-RELATED
DON QUINE’S OTHER WESTERNS
Don Quine, Stacy Grainger on THE
VIRGINIAN, had confirmed to me in our interview that his only other western
role was in a RAWHIDE episode. After
the interview ran, he emailed me, “I was going through some old photos and came
across one that had me in a cowboy outfit where I was a member of an outlaw
gang in the ‘Foley’ episode of 20th Fox's LANCER TV series. So I was in three,
not two, westerns.”
I just received a photo of him in the role, and he looked so
handsome I thought I’d share it with you.
DIANE ROTER CATCHES MY FREUDIAN
SLIP
Diane Roter on RAT PATROL
After my interview with Diane
Roter, Jennifer Sommers on THE VIRGINIAN, appeared in the Round-up, she sent me
a very generous email, but she did catch an error on my part. “I got a real kick out of reading that I
played a French courtesan on RAT PATROL... there is a similarity to the
words, but I actually played a teenaged French partisan (a resistance
fighter) in an episode called THE DOUBLE JEOPARDY RAID.
Interestingly enough, however, I once did play a (16 year old mentally disabled Egyptian) prostitute in JUSTINE, directed by George Cukor and based on The Alexandria Quartet by Lawrence Durrell.”

GARY CLARKE’S SECRET IDENTITY
Gary Clarke, Steve Hill on THE
VIRGINIAN, told me that, post-VIRGINIAN, he’d enjoyed working for producer
Andrew J. Fenady in his series HONDO, and credited his performance as Captain
Richards with, years later, helping him land his role in TOMBSTONE. But he still had a bone to pick with Fenady. “He almost ruined my writing career. Because
I gave him an outline for a show that I think would have been terrific. I
handed it to him. And he took it, and handed it back, and said, ‘Gary , you’re an actor.
Act. Let the writers write.’” Gary was so concerned
that he’d be ‘found out’ as an actor that he wrote several episodes of GET
SMART under a nom de plume, and even
went to the office in disguise. “I never
saw Andy after that, to tell him, so if you see Andy, tell him for me.”
When I told the creator of THE
REBEL and producer of BRANDED and HONDO the story, he was amazed. “I didn’t mean to discourage Gary .
But everyone in the show was giving me scripts, including Ralph Taeger
(Hondo), and we were already full up! I
just wanted him to take it over to BONANZA!”

'WILD HORSE' MAKES FOR A WILD RIDE!
WILD HORSE, WILD RIDE – Film Review
WILD HORSE, WILD RIDE, directed by Alex Dawson and Greg
Gricus, is a documentary about kindness and decency. I hope that doesn’t sound too sappy, because
the movie isn’t at all. Thousands of
wild horses run loose on government land, and every year, thousands are rounded
up and removed. They all need homes and,
as it says in the film’s introduction, “None has ever been touched by a human
hand.”
The Mustang Heritage Foundation, whose mission is to facilitate
and encourage wild horse adoption, sponsors an annual event called the Extreme
Mustang Makeover Challenge, in which one-hundred people get one wild mustang,
and one-hundred days to train it for a competition in Fort Worth, Texas. The hope is that, the more tame the horse,
the better the home it will find when it’s auctioned after the competition.
The movie focuses on nine individuals who take part, and
they are an impressively mixed bunch.
There are experienced trainers who have done this before, and a
biomedical engineer who has never trained a horse. There’s the stunning blonde rodeo
cowgirl. And there are cowboys, from a
pair of 20-ish brothers in New Hampshire , to a
Mexican immigrant in Wisconsin ,
to a Navajo father and son from the res, to an ageing cowpoke taking part along
with his seventh bride.
Although there is an explicit ticking clock, the underlying
theme of the film is patience, as each rider gentles and trains their animal,
and the filmmakers, allowing their film the same tone as their theme, eschew
rapid cutting and fast music to instead show the same calm and patience as the
trainers. There are many quiet moments
in the movie, which are no less exciting for their lack of drum-beat.
The methods of the trainers are as different as their
backgrounds. Some are on the horses
quickly; others ride for the first time just days before the competition. Some train the horses blindfolded; some work
from the center of the corral; some work the new animals side-by-side with a
trained animal. Though all that take
part do so out of compassion, there are additional motives as well. The older men in particular have a need to
prove something to themselves. These are
all people of no great wealth who give selflessly of their time. There is a respect and love that develops
between human and horse during the process, even between the most cantankerous
participants. And there is sadness, and
sometimes tears, with the realization that, the better the job they do, the
less likely the trainer will be able to afford that horse at auction.
WILD HORSE, WILD RIDE is a beautiful, inspiring film which
opened theatrically on Friday, August 24th. To learn more, and to find out when it will
be at a theatre near you, go HERE. If you're in the L.A. area, the film will screen on Tuesday, September 6th at the Autry, at 6 pm.

‘COPPER’ – Television Review
Tom Weston-Jones
On Sunday nights, while you’re enjoying season 2 of the
post-Civil War Western series HELL ON WHEELS, you might find it worth your
while to check out the new Eastern
set in the same period on the opposite coast, COPPER. The first original dramatic series to be
produced by BBC-America, it premiered last Sunday, August 19th, with
a strong opener to its ten-episode season.
Set in New York City ’s
infamous Five Corners District, the tale is as compelling as it is relentlessly
grim. Examining a world most viewers were
introduced to in Martin Scorsese’s erratic film based on the brilliant history,
GANGS OF NEW YORK, by Herbert Asbury, the story follows a Civil War hero and
transplanted Irish cop, Detective Kevin Corcoran (Tom Weston-Jones), as he
tries to see justice done on New York’s meanest streets and alleyways.
Five Points, New York reproduced in Canada
No saint himself, we meet him when he and the other cops he
works with ambush and slaughter a pack of bank-robbers, then gleefully pocket
the loot until more disciplined police arrive.
Corcoran has an in-depth knowledge of the dregs of New York , but a connection with high society
as well, through fellow war-vet and wealthy dilettante Robert Morehouse (Kyle
Schmid). He works overtly with Det.
Francis McGuire (Kevin Ryan), and covertly with Dr. Matthew Freeman (Ato
Essandoh). Freeman is a black m.d., and
while Corcoran turns to him for his forensic expertise, he must present the
findings as his own, knowing a black doctor’s evidence would never be taken
seriously by N.Y.P.D. of the time. He is
also a friend to various scarlet women, among them Madam Eva Heissen (Franka
Potente).
5th Avenue Society
Corcoran comes with a personal axe to grind – he’s
investigating the death of his wife and child (and if it sounds a bit like HELL
ON WHEELS on that score, HELL ON WHEELS sounds a bit like OUTLAW JOSIE
WALES). And he’s got a case he’s drawn
into – the appearance and disappearance of a street-urchin prostitute. This is a story of corruption and evil, and
I’d not recommend it for the kiddies, but for grown-ups who like their heroes
tough, and their villains despicable, you can’t very easily top a
necro-pedophile.
Digging for clues
Lensed in dank, shadowy Canada , the show is created and
written by a sterling trio of scribes: Tom Fontana, Will Rokos, and Barry
Levinson. It is grim, grueling fun, and
gives a convincing and involving glimpse at one of the most tragic times in our
greatest city.
WHY ANTHONY LAPAGLIA QUIT ‘DJANGO’
"The people at Django, their attitude more or less was, 'Just dump the
other film', but I couldn't do it out of respect to (director) Rob Connolly,
out of respect to the material, out of respect to the material, out of respect
to the commitment I’d made.”
Thus Anthony LaPaglia left his small, much-postponed role in the Tarantino
film to honor his commitment to UNDERGROUND, a film about Wikileaks founder
Julian Assange, which had been financed based on LaPaglia playing the
lead. LaPaglia joins a slew of actors
who were cast in DJANGO UNCHAINED, then walked, including Joseph
Gordon-Leavitt, who was to play LaPaglia’s brother; Kevin Costner; Kurt
Russell; Sacha Baron Cohen; and Jonah Hill, who agreed, then left, then
returned as another character.
While LaPaglia says he had a good time on the DJANGO set, hanging around
and waiting to work, he said the production, “…was just out of control,
over-budget, it was everywhere.”
REDBOX SIMPLIFIES FINDING ‘LEGEND OF HELL’S GATE’
If you plan to rent LEGEND OF HELL’S GATE – and you certainly should – and
I don’t say that just because Henry’s Western Round-Up is quoted on the box –
there’s a quick and easy way to locate a copy near you. The good folks at Redbox contacted me and
said that if you go here -- http://www.redbox.com/movies/the-legend-of-hells-gate-of-hells-gate -- and type in your zip code, ect to the commitment I'd made.''

‘WILD BOYS’ – AUSSIE WESTERN SERIES IS WELL WORTH A LOOK!
As long as we’re being big-hearted and including Easterns like COPPER in
the Round-up, let’s take it a little farther, and check out a ‘western’ set in
and shot in Australia’s New South Wales, WILD BOYS. The official synopsis for the series is: Australia
1860s, Wild Boys follows a gang of bushrangers as they stage hold-ups
determined to keep ahead of the troopers or wind up at the end of a noose.
There were ten episodes in 2011,
and it appears that there is a second
season, which has its finale tonight, but I’m not sure, and none of the videos
posted on the official site will run in the U.S. But the trailer is below, and I’ll be finding
out more this week.
SATURDAY NOON MATINEE AT THE AUTRY
As they do on the first Saturday of every month, the Autry presents a free double-feature of Gene's movies. This coming Saturday, September 1st, it's YODELIN' KID FROM PINE RIDGE (Republic 1937) and LAST OF THE PONY RIDERS (Columbia 1953). The latter deals with the Pony Express being supplanted by the stagecoach business, and features a fine performance by Dick Jones.
ALL-STAR BIG VALLEY SADDLE-UP SATURDAY ON INSP
Saturday, September 1st, INSP will present a marathon of BIG VALLEYs with guest stars like William Shatner, Adam West, Richard Dreyfus, Bruce Dern, Charles Bronson, Leslie Neilsen, Milton Berle, George Kennedy, Ron Howard, Dennis Hopper and Regis Philbin!
That’s it for today’s Round-up! Don’t forget to catch episode three of the second season of HELL ON WHEELS tonight on AMC. Next week I’ll have, among other things, and interview with HEATHENS AND THIEVES co-director John Douglas Sinclair.
Have a great Labor Day Weekend!
Happy Trails!
